One of the most toxic behaviors to emerge on the internet is when we try to silence others by telling them to “stay in their lane”
We’ve started to bucketize and stereotype each other based on the identity attributes we see: left/right, gay/straight, race etc. Then we punish anyone who defies our expectations.
Aka Kim Kardashian speaking on prison reform (“she’s just an influencer”), Colin Kaepernick on kneeling during the anthem (“Stick to playing football”), tech founders talking about mindfulness
This is the natural endpoint of “people = brands”. We like our brands consistent. We don’t like our brands to do unexpected things!
Social media is a very narrow window into seeing a view of a whole human being. Making assumptions about who someone else is creates a very disconnected society. You are a complex person! Your fellows probably are too.
