PIOJ reports that the poverty rate for 2017 was 19.3%, higher than the 17.1% in 2016 but lower than the 21.2% in 2015.
Against the backdrop of the 2013 poverty rate of 24.6%, (which was the highest poverty rate since 1996), the general trend is downward though not smoothly.
The 25% increase in budgetary allocation this year, across the range of major social protection programmes, should assist in reducing the poverty rate though we will not rest there.
Since mentioned was made of 2013 having the highest rate of poverty since 1996, for balance, let me also mention that the lowest rate of poverty since 1990 was in 2007.
