They were at the periphery of Gay Liberation and Lesbian Feminism and took their cues from those movements for their own activism. Some of them even infiltrated through homosexual transvestite groups (Bunny Eisenhower) and lesbian feminist groups (Sandy Stone).

It was heterosexual transvestites like Virginia and Ari who first used the word transgender to describe themselves, to disassociate their “gender expression” from any sexual interest they had with wearing women’s clothes.

The word was originally coined by a sexologist as a replacement word for transsexual, again to disassociate it from sex. Homosexual transsexuals like Christine Jorgensen and the few early FtM transsexuals eventually got a wind of it.

By the early to mid 1990s, transgender became the community word to begin replacing words like transvestite and transsexual. Janice Raymond herself said the word was just a cover up for sexist men who were playing with femininity and masculinity.

They slowly convinced people by using their own sexism against them with narratives of “women trapped in men’s bodies”. They used the common misconception of associating transvestism and transsexualism with male homosexuality to convince gay men and lesbians.

They’ve used the plight of homosexual transsexuals in racial and ethnic minority communities, where effeminate homosexual boys were and occasionally still are regularly despised, since the 1970s with Sylvia Rivera and Marsha Johnson and Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries.

Postmodernism, queer theory and third wave feminism have just been tools for them to convince academics and activists that their disforia is not caused by sexual interests. If everyone is in denial or ignorant about a well-documented paraphilia simply out of politeness...

...then imagine what you can do. If you use people’s own sexism against them, imagine what you can do. You can convince even your own mother that masturbating in her underwear means you are really “a woman”. Not a man with a serious sexual issue that needs help.
