I’ve been writing and talking about the rise of white nationalist terror — a specific subset of white supremacy with specific ideological characteristics — for years. I’ll share a few things here that might be helpful. wnyc.org/story/white-su…
A lot of people have been researching and writing on this for a long time. A lot of people have said for decades — literal decades, since Greensboro in 1979 and the rise of the Order and the murder of Alan Berg and the spread of the white power movement — that this was a crisis.
It was a crisis in 1979. It was a crisis in 1984. It was a crisis in 1994. It was a crisis in 1999, and 2014, and today. In fact, relatively little about the specific ideological underpinnings of white nationalism have changed since the mid-1970s.
(While white supremacism has a long history in the United States, the specifics of white nationalism — a subset of white supremacy but with an ideological focus all its own — find their origins in the late 1960s.)
Think of white nationalism as a subset of white supremacism. White nationalism is a type of white supremacism, one with specific characteristics and specific founding documents, so to speak. (The Turner Diaries, for example.)
But if you were on Stormfront in 2002, none of this is new.
