Woodrow Wilson sucked, a continuing series pbs.org/wgbh/americane…
In 1901, Wilson, then a Princeton professor, wrote a piece for The Atlantic Monthly, in which he said this.

What gets me about Wilson is that his racism was very much of the antebellum (his belief that slaves NEEDED slavery or else they wouldn’t know what to do) but he’d been educated in the North so he could parse out his racism in a very paternalistic, pleading way that appealed.

My colleague @zackbeauchamp attended the National Conservatism conference (I wasn’t permitted to do so) and heard Amy Wax speak. vox.com/2019/7/17/2069…
As Beauchamp notes, Wax cites John Derbyshire in her paper (who was fired from NRO for a bananas racist piece). But she also approvingly cites Jared Taylor.
Jared Taylor is a white nationalist, editor of the outlet American Renaissance and occasional spokesperson for the Council of Conservative Citizens, which described black people as a “retrograde species.” vox.com/2018/8/22/1776…

So, in other news, something I am working on is avoiding “nutpicking” — finding the most bananas example of a certain group and extrapolating that that is the group itself. So I’d like to preface the following by saying that this is not general of the conservative movement.
But today the Journal of American Greatness (a publication that is attempting to put meat on the bones of Trumpism, so to speak) published this “poem,” by someone using a pseudonym. It is entitled “Cuck Elegy."

One of the truly great things about America is that it was in fact founded by virulently racist white men, but those racist white men created a document in the Constitution that could not exist simultaneously with either state-supported enslavement or Jim Crow.
Frederick Douglass broke with his initial political allies (the Garrisonites who believed that the Constitution was an inherently pro-slavery documentation) on this matter. He used the Constitution to whack pro-slavery Americans over the head with their own hypocrisy.

1. White Citizens Council of Jackson, MS radio show that aired soon after JFK was assassinated in Dallas in November 1963. The most striking thing is the utter lack of remorse about JFK, seemingly because they thought he was suspiciously liberal. cdm16631.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collec…
2. Note how familiar some of these arguments probably sound to us today. This passage could have come right out of the mouth of Trump Jr or any number of conservative commentators--"the left" is bigoted, insane, and incapable of rational thought.

1. Targeted bombing attacks (like the one the nation is currently facing) are criminal acts, but they are also political acts intended to intimidate and silence. We should think of them as speech acts as well as acts of violence.
2. Such acts of targeted silencing have a long history in the US. They were a major weapon which white people used to protect and extend white supremacy after slavery ended.
3. It began in 1865 when a white supremacist assassinated Abraham Lincoln and several of his Confederate associates targeted other members of Lincoln's Administration. pbs.org/wgbh/americane…
