In 1901, Wilson, then a Princeton professor, wrote a piece for The Atlantic Monthly, in which he said this.

What gets me about Wilson is that his racism was very much of the antebellum (his belief that slaves NEEDED slavery or else they wouldn’t know what to do) but he’d been educated in the North so he could parse out his racism in a very paternalistic, pleading way that appealed.
