The past week has been shocking: #DaytonShooting #ElPasoShooting #GilroyShooting #BrownsvilleShooting. We've all got to do our part on #gunviolence in America. That starts by learning about the problem and solutions. Over the past year & a half, I've devoted myself to this cause.
Season 3 of my podcast @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com has covered #gunviolence in America. In our first chapter, we tackled the unique history that produced America's gun culture. In our second chapter, we delve into how race and gender intersect with guns and gun violence.
@ISIHpodcast In the third chapter of Season 3 of @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com we focused on #guns themselves: do more guns lead to more vs less crime... what does it look like when people use guns in self-defense... instrumentality... & the impact of Australia's gun buyback.
@ISIHpodcast In the fourth chapter of Season 3 of @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com we drilled down on urban #gunviolence: how guns & violence are transmitted, how criminals get guns, who's responsible for the #shootings, what works to reduce #gunshootings, & the role of the #police #cops.
@ISIHpodcast In the fifth chapter of Season 3 of @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com we'll talk about the link between #mentalillness & #gunviolence (hint: it's mostly about #suicide), why #meansmatter, and how #gunsafety & #gunrights advocates can work together to save lives.
@ISIHpodcast And in the sixth & final chapter of Season 3 of @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com we'll talk about where to go from here. #EnoughIsEnough. This is a #NationalEmergency. #WeNeedToKnow. We need #Evidence4Change.
@ISIHpodcast Listen to Season 3 of @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com If you agree that more people need to learn about the science of #gunviolence & what we can do about it, please share. These are important conversations we all need to hear. #MomsDemand #AMarch4OurLives #EveryTown

1/ Stemming the spread of H5N1 bird flu
🔹The federal government is ramping up testing of dairy cows
🔹Cows will now have to be tested before being transferred to another state
🔹H5N1 viral fragments detected in grocery store milk
🔹The risk to humans remains low at this time
2/ Remember PCR tests from COVID?

They can be positive even after you’ve recovered because they’re picking up dead virus.

Some PCR tests on pasteurized milk from grocery stores have come back positive for bird flu... but that could just be dead virus.
3/ Pasteurization has worked for over a hundred years to protect consumers from bacteria and viruses.

There’s no reason to think pasteurization won’t also work to kill the bird flu virus, but scientists are confirming that with testing anyway.

1/ H5N1 bird flu has been detected in the milk supply

We currently believe the milk supply to be safe.

Some other key points:washingtonpost.com/health/2024/04…

2/ The levels of virus fragments being found in milk by PCR are high.

Milk from different cows is combined into big vats.

You wouldn't see such high levels of virus if only a couple cows were infected... it would be diluted down.

This implies many cows have been infected.
3/ I suspect there's been a ton of asymptomatic transmission among cows.

They've only been testing symptomatic cows.

1/ The 2nd human case of H5N1 bird flu was reported in the US yesterday.

This case was in Texas & likely involved transmission from an infected cow🐄 to this individual.

The 1st case was reported in Colorado in 2022.

with @tonydokoupil @GayleKing @nateburleson
2/ The person in Texas became ill with H5N1 bird flu after direct contact with infected dairy cattle🐄.

The patient's primary symptom was conjunctivitis (i.e. pink eye).

The patient is isolating & is being treated with an antiviral for flu... as are their close contacts.
3/ The risk to the general public is believed to be low at this time.

Risk factors for H5N1 bird flu:
🔹Close contact with animals suspected of having H5N1 bird flu
🔹Close contact with someone infected with H5N1 bird fluImage

1/ Ohio is reporting an outbreak of pediatric pneumonia cases.

This is similar to the "white lung syndrome" (aka ARDS) that is being seen in Europe & China.

THIS IS NOT DUE TO A NOVEL PATHOGEN CAUSING A NEW PANDEMIC.

on @CBSEveningNews @CBSNews with @noraodonnell & @megoliver
2/ Lung "white out" = acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

This can be caused by viral & bacterial infections as well as other conditions.

Before people had much immunity to COVID in 2020, this was how people with COVID most often presented to the hospital.
3/ This seems to be a similar phenomenon to the pediatric pneumonia outbreak in China... but that is NOT to say that they are connected.

It's being caused by a combo of viral (e.g. RSV, COVID, flu, adenovirus, rhinovirus) & bacterial (e.g. Mycoplasma pneumoniae) infections.
