#SaturdayThoughts Does it bother you that the President was willing to hold up money that Congress has appropriated for Ukraine defense so he could try to get dirt on his political opponent? Too abstract?
Well then, does it bother you that his administration is in court to void the #ACA so that there’s no protection from insurance companies charging you more money for pre-existing conditions? Still too abstract?
Maybe this: How about meeting with NRA and letting them dictate #gunsafety policy in exchange for money for his re-election campaign? Doesn’t bother you?

NEW THREAD: (TL;DR - The 2nd Amendment was never intended as a limitless right to private firearms ownership.)

18th Century concepts of 'militia' in America were very different than popular understanding these days. #2A #GunReformNow
In the late 1700s, the militias were the backbone of security for the newly established USA. Every adult white man from age 16 and up was required to be in the militia. It was the 18th Century version of compulsory military service. #2A #GunReformNow
The militia were viewed as a bulwark against the tyranny of a standing army. Because of their experience with the British Red Coats, Americans were robustly against a paid, standing army.

(Clearly, in 2019, having a standing army is no longer a concern for most Americans.) #2A

THREAD- Domestic Terrorism has always been a big threat, and it’s a good thing that the media is finally using this language. Dealing with it will take all levels of government of civil society. /1 #domesticterrorism #domesticterrorist #domesticterrorismlaw
Terrorism is social and political activism using violence or credibly threatening it. It is designed to create mass fear, and often has massive financial and logistical support. /2 #terrorism #domesticterrorism
Due to the potential for damage and mass casualties, the tremendous resources terrorists often have, and the exorbitant costs to society, Terrorism is in fact different than crime. Municipalities can predict murders over the course of a fiscal year, they can't afford bombs. /3

We're not going to link to the @Oregonian's endorsement in the Governor's race.

We will, however, point out that it's the usual disingenuous, right-leaning claptrap from a paper that seems to pride itself on being wildly out of step with average Oregonians.

In 2016, they begrudgingly endorsed @OregonGovBrown, but held her feet to the fire for not passing a transportation bill.

She has since been lauded for passing that transportation bill and gets no credit for it in their latest endorsement.

@KnuteBuehler voted against it.

.@KnuteBuehler is credited for voting for ONE #GunSafety bill AFTER he declared his run for governor.

@KateBrownForOR is given NO credit for repeatedly sticking her neck out on this issue, vocally advocating for multiple bills, 3 of which she passed & signed into law.

This is reckless and absurd, @BetsyDeVosED. First: Maryland law already requires school districts to provide a trained school resource officer to ensure school safety. #GunSafety
Second: as Maryland educators prepare to head back to school, 91% will use their own money to purchase supplies for their classrooms. They need resources to support struggling students and address mental health needs – not firearms to protect from imaginary grizzly bear attacks.
Third: our educators are exactly that – educators. A difficult enough job as it stands. They do not want guns in their classrooms, making the job exponentially more difficult and dangerous. This proposal would ignore that reality, which is precisely why I'll fight it. #GunSafety

We asked #BWCS endorsed candidates where they stand on #GunReform

.@PiattPatti's son died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Watching others lose a child and knowing what they feel brings it all back. I don't have a problem with responsible gun ownership, but there is nothing responsible about owning an AR-15."
"If we want teachers to have to ability to make offensive measures, why not non-lethal weapons? It's terrible that we would have to, but if we do, that route should not be firearms." -@TomPrigg2018

Hi, #GunSense crowd? I'd like to help you if I could. Let's take a walk, shall we? Here we go: I am a #2A Defender and #ConcealedCarry advocate - WAIT, DON'T RUN AWAY!!!! - but I would also like to end #GunViolence and promote #GunSafety. You alright!? Still with me? Okay.
The realistic way to do this, while protecting our #2A right to keep & bear arms (#RKBA) is to fix and enforce the gun laws already on the books. There should also be harsher penalties for people who 'lie & try' as well as felons found in possession of a weapon. Still good? Good.
We would also fix the background check system (NICS) - FIX, NOT CHANGE - and we know that teaching small children what to do if they ever come across a gun and promoting gun safety to older children PREVENTS accidents, so we'd like to do that, too.
