(Thread) I want to clear up some mumblings on here about the Code of Conduct and Safety Officers for #JMIH2019. I was one of several (6ish) society representatives volunteering as “safety officers” and working with Lori Strong who attending the meeting as a rep from the...
...company organizing our new reporting system. We were “point people” that attendees could report or discuss issues of violations of the JMIH Code of Conduct. There was also an online system where people could remain anonymous.
The explosion of people blaming the system and the safety officers are performing some classic gaslighting.

For info about the issues I’m referring to:

And here
These issues above had nothing to do anything wrong with the system of safety officers or the code of conduct. It all had to do with people spreading untrue rumors without checking with anyone involved and then treating the supposed perpetrator badly for something ....
he didn’t actually do. Those spreading the rumors didn’t even USE the system.

The UNTRUE rumor was that David Hillis was bullying a student, but no one knew the “student” name. Several someones who heard the rumors brought them up with one of the society representative ...
....safety officers, who passed it on to Lori. Lori asked David about it, found out who the supposed “victim” was, Stu Nielsen; Lori asked Stu about it, Stu said that the rumors were completely untrue. Lori considered the issue resolved (BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ISSUE).
Again, this situation sucked, David did not do anything to deserve being treated badly, this was all due to UNTRUE RUMORS. The whole point of the system is so that we could get rid of the rumor mill, instead of ignoring problems, have a way to deal with them.
This system is also in place to deal with very real and serious issues that have happened at these meetings in the past, sexual harassment and assault. If anyone reports an issue at JMIH, Lori along with the society representatives will discus appropriate actions and follow ...
through with them. This does not include making people not spread rumors, we should just maybe not do that as grown ups.
Yes, if someone does something inappropriate or makes you feel unwelcome, bully, etc., report those issues. But please stop talking about how the system was “broken.” The system was not even used in this case.

End thread rant.
