Perennial reminder: Don’t filter yourself out.
Along with the usual advice, if you’re from an underrepresented group, take the time to find someone who has done their homework on race & gender bias in language choice for letters.
I know. More work, but it makes a big quality difference.
Dear [formal title],
I [did thing with you] in [timeframe]. [identifying positive context].
I’m applying for [opportunity]. Are you willing and available to write a recommendation letter for me due [date]?
Thank you,
[full name]
It’s awkward, but if you’re getting brushed off because you thought you rocked it and they didn’t, that’s incredibly important.
It’s also good practice: men tend to push back more
“Thank you! Ideally, I’d like your letter to highlight [qualities]. Reading [research], I’m particularly concerned about [type of bias] language. Does that work?
I attached my resume, [grades/performance eval], [relevant projects]. Would you like anything else?”

A: Yeah. YEAH. I might be missing something, but I’m pretty sure that it’s reflecting an actual imbalance in research.
Please tack on more links if you have ‘em.
Some people will actually accept and write an indifferent (or negative!) recommendation letter.
Why? Some people are power-tripping assholes, I guess? idek.
- start EARLY
- be polite, erring on overly-formal
- give abundant context
- give lots of outs (you do NOT want a reluctant reference)
- clearly communicate expectations
- clearly request THEIR expectations (including pace of follow-up nagging)
Recc from APEG members will probably help. It’s unfair, but shared credentials carry trust.
Academics are slammed in Sept. Industry folks are less experienced writing letters (-), but less burnt out (+) & speak same style as evaluators (+).

Your odds are so good just by how few geos & eng students are in the province. By random chance, it’s like 1:1000 to pick up $1k.
Apply.
