Ken Cuccinelli says some of benefits not included in the changes are some assistances to pregnant women, mortgage loans and students loans. Bu benefits like food stamps, cash assistance and other benefits will count against immigrants. Refugees and asylum seekers aren’t impacted
Americans and immigrants have “pulled themselves up by their boot straps” in the past, Cuccinelli says and adds that this rule change is about “encouraging core values” that will help people reach the “American dream.”
We are looking for people "who can stand on their own two feet," Cuccinelli said adding that it would be heavily weight negatively if an immigrant uses the benefits for longer than than the government's rule states.
Q: Why should Latinos across the country not feel targeted by this change?
Cuccinelli: If we were having this conversation 100 years ago, we would be targeting about the Irish.
Reporter: But we are having this conversation today.
I didn't get a question in to Cuccinelli this time but the question remains, what does this administration say to many using public benefits as a bridge to the American dream including in pursuit of professional degrees and technical trainings as they get on their feet?
