Listening to a conversation about "programming".

Why do I get to hear people talking about "programming" that obviously don't know about "programming".

OH: "I like programming, but I don't like all the other bits that people do, like looking after stuff when it goes live"
OH: "The thing is with *education* is that each level gets harder"

One older person is giving advice to a younger person, and it's all fine, but there are some proper facepalm moments.
Now... the older guy is explaining how to get into working at investment banks.

Thus limiting yourself to the only common denominators of phone and text and sacrificing EVERY OTHER DIFFERENTIATING SERVICE THAT THE PROVIDERS HAVE.

So if you want to *only have phone and text* then be my guest.

I'm working around a decade ahead of you.
The "phone number" thing? The equivalent in tech is probably domain name and that's already separated from all the cloud vendors so that's really a pointless argument.
Honestly, the fact that people come up with these terrible multi cloud analogies and shoot themselves in the foot is just mind-blowing and hilarious all at once.

I often don't like being called a CTO, or a Chief Product Officer because in the minds of business people it's "Glorified Techie" or "Glorified Project Manager"

Maybe I should be "Chief Strategy and Technology Officer"

Or "Chief Technology Strategy Officer"
An experienced CTO can often find that their business opinion is dismissed by an inexperienced CEO.

The odd thing is that when you've been a CTO for a while, you often have more experience of leadership than most startup CEOs.
However, when moving upwards towards the CEO role in a business, an experienced CTO can often be looked at with curiosity.

It's strange to say it, but an inexperienced CEO with great mentoring CTOs is often a good team, because they don't have baggage.

So, as gas consumption continues to wane, oil cos have steadily been putting more resources into ... not solar, no. Not wind either. And hahahaha no, no not carbon capture. Don't believe the hype. Petrochemicals. Specifically to make single-use plastic. (1/?)
These take the form of either crude-to-chemicals facilities, also called crude crackers (which, brilliant), or ethane-to-ethylene crackers, which capture ethane from fracking wellpads and turn it into ethylene to make plastic. A waste product into plastic! So green!
So, more plastic, which we absolutely don't need. BUT ALSO more CO2. If plastic production grows as planned -- and it's a steep trajectory up at the moment -- carbon emissions from these crackers will be equivalent to emissions of 295 500MW coal plants.

First: in New England, I ALWAYS hear people talking politics in restaurants. I heard none of that over three days exclusively eating out.
2nd: Maybe I was in the wrong area, but I didn’t see any political signage anywhere, on card or yard signs. It struck me as weird. I was in a left leaning college area so I assumed there would be some out of protest.

Let's say we have a 5 yr old autistic girl, Sam. Sam is asked to sit still on the floor at school during 'circle time'. Sam does not sit still. Sam gets up and wanders round. What's potentially happening here?/
Firstly, let's look at how the classroom may appear to Sam. Not all autistic children will see this exact effect, when in noisy, busy, fluorescent-lit spaces. Some do. Teacher becomes invisible in the sensory chaos. /
Secondly, Sam may be able to hear people talking across the entire school. Next door, moving in the hallways, chairs scraping, bells sounding, planes overhead, clocks ticking. It is a deafening, bewildering experience. Teacher becomes impossible to hear./

1) I don't have a ton of followers, so I hope this thread gets RTed by someone who does, BECAUSE I AM PISSED!

The bullied are becoming the school shooters. Know why? Because no one stopped those who bullied them! It is a sad truth that kids cannot defend themselves.
2) Kids are taught and told not to defend themselves! If they retaliate, they are punished, just like the bullies! That's exactly what #NoTolerance IS! It means that teachers and adminstration don't need to use discernment, in any situation. Everyone is punished, no matter what.
3) There is something fundamentally wrong with punishing the victim for defending themselves. Also, when punishing both the bully and the victim, the bully usually isn't afraid of consequence. THAT'S WHY THEY'RE A BULLY. It also sends the message that defending yourself is wrong.
