So, without even really trying to, I've thrown one of the larger parties at WisCon the past three years. And I know there are several orders of magnitude difference between a large convention party at WisCon and a private party by one of the most famous authors in the world.
But, I don't know. I feel like when you throw a party, you're giving a gift. It's the nature of hospitality. It's a lot of work, a lot of money, and... if everybody but the host has a good time, it's still a successful party, whereas if the host does and others don't, it's not.
Ideally the host should have a blast, too, especially if it's supposed to be sustainable. Burnout is real! No one should be required to martyr themselves in order to give the gift of a good time.
No big argument or answer here. Just a perspective on hosting.

Hospitality is a big responsibility to take on.
I don't think we talk about hospitality enough in our culture. Sacred hospitality as anything other than a fun relic for fantasy books.
