I don't have much to add on Immanuel Wallerstein's passing that hasn't already been eloquently said. I will just say two things. 1st, I teach "The Rise and Future Demise of the World Capitalist System" every year as one of the first readings in my Intro to Comparative Politics 1/
It's consistently among their favorite readings- which I admit I didn't predict. They know there's lots wrong in the world but lack coherent analysis. Reading Wallerstein is empowering, making sense of vast inequalities in power& resources, & teaching systemic critical thought 2/
2nd, scholarly confidence is ofc gendered (& raced, classed) but: the assertiveness of his writing has always appealed to me as a model. Here's one example, concluding paragraph of that article. Substantive points aside, the strength of the language sends chills down my spine 3/
