An exciting aspect of the #GreenNewDeal framework is possibilities for transnational solidarity & collaboration. One manifestation is the newly vibrant conversations and diffusion of proposals btwn social movements, leftist policy experts & academics across the Atlantic. 1/

I don't have much to add on Immanuel Wallerstein's passing that hasn't already been eloquently said. I will just say two things. 1st, I teach "The Rise and Future Demise of the World Capitalist System" every year as one of the first readings in my Intro to Comparative Politics 1/
It's consistently among their favorite readings- which I admit I didn't predict. They know there's lots wrong in the world but lack coherent analysis. Reading Wallerstein is empowering, making sense of vast inequalities in power& resources, & teaching systemic critical thought 2/
2nd, scholarly confidence is ofc gendered (& raced, classed) but: the assertiveness of his writing has always appealed to me as a model. Here's one example, concluding paragraph of that article. Substantive points aside, the strength of the language sends chills down my spine 3/

This was hard to read bc it could be about my parents (& maybe yours). There is an elderly bankruptcy crisis in America. Neoliberal policies destroyed unions, pensions & benefits, & inundate us with deceptively cheap credit. Families are now pools of intergenerational debt. 1/
The tragedy, and utter depravity of our society, is in the details. I used to think of astronomical student loan debt as a “millennials” issue: but these loans are increasingly co-signed by grandparents. #CancelStudentDebt would liberate students & seniors alike 2/
Of course, soaring medical bills are a major source of debt. Seniors have to choose between paying off a surgery, paying rent, and eating dinner. This man, on kidney dialysis, wasn’t granted a *two week* extension to get together a $335 fee in order to file bankruptcy 3/

I've been thinking about time-as-domination, optimization, & its moods (guilt; depression; anxiety; isolation). And the alternative might be: freedom as control of our time. And, also, how to get there: admitting the demands are impossible; sharing grievances; naming the enemy 1/
I listened to @emilygee on @thedigradio recount her experiences in an Amazon warehouse, a call center, & a McDonalds. The common denominator is the relentless & minute control of time; a psychic war that seeps into life well beyond the workplace 2/ tinyurl.com/yyu9o6tm
The account is harrowing, but not w/o hope. Emily says that when workers develop class consciousness, they stop blaming themselves for not "making rate" & start imagining what a reasonable society might look like -- she saw evidence of this consciousness everywhere she worked 3/

With that said, I believe Joe Biden is the most conservative & problematic candidate now officially in the race.

In the 70s he fought against integration.

In the 80s & 90s he fought harder for mass incarceration than any single Democrat.

In the 2000s he voted for the Iraq War.
The best years of Joe Biden's political career were the 8 years he spent as Vice President of the United States.

And that's mainly because he didn't get to set the agenda himself.

When he sets the agenda - it has consistently been for more war & more jail.

Period.
When I survey Biden's political career, I find it deeply problematic that he has to start out with an extensive apology for being wrong on some of the most important votes of the past 40 years.

And that we have to believe those wrong votes don't actually represent him.

Our power as a movement flows from the grassroots. Last Spring, we launched Sunrise Semester, w/ 80 young ppl stepping up to put climate change on the agenda in the primaries & general elections. One of the first people we endorsed for signing the #NoFossilFuelMoney pledge: @AOC
For months we knocked on thousands of doors, made thousands of phone calls to get climate champions into office, candidates who signed the #NoFossilFuelMoney pledge. By November 7, we had helped elect over 500 of them to office at all levels of government-- including Congress.

First, there's much to like about the #GreenNewDeal. But also much that could be better. An ideal climate policy:
a) Makes a meaningful impact.
b) Addresses problems the market isn't addressing itself.
c) Is cost-effective.
d) Is actually passable.

Let's start with impact. 2/
The common wisdom on how climate policies have impact is wrong. Politicians think that a country's climate policy is about reducing that same country's emissions. Nope. The most effective climate policies reduce *global* emissions, or at least provide tools to do so. 3/

Gonna be thinking about what a #GreenNewDeal would look like at the local level in San Francisco.
A few things immediately come to mind: free MUNI, full build out of the bike network with protected lanes, an aggressive social housing program, rapid decarbonization of all buildings, SMART* water infrastructure, & a public bank to help finance stuff.
The beauty of the #GreenNewDeal framework isn't just that it harkens back to something the US has once done, but that it can be an intersectional approach to (re)organizing our society around things that matter.
