A strange phenomenon happens when people feel controlled. Either they rebel, or they suspend their intrinsic drive to do good work for its own sake. The reward (or threat of punishment) *corrupts* the satisfaction that comes from doing something *just* for its own sake. ...
The energy to chase rewards needs continuous replenishment. It needs a continuous stream of ever bigger rewards, or else it dries out quickly.

OTOH, the intrinsic drive to do something JUST for its own sake lasts much longer — possibly forever. ...
Corrupting people’s intrinsic drive with rewards is counterproductive. It might work in the short term, but it doesn’t last. If you want others to help you do something, make sure they’re paid what they’re worth, and let them derive their own satisfaction from self-directed work.
