Complete refusal to engage with the details that really matter to peoples’ lives is the mark of a certain kind of Brexiter. Nothing must delay the immediate implementation of the project in its most extreme form.
But, given the degree of legal integration and the millions of businesses and lives built on the UK’s EU membership, Brexit was always going to be complex and gradual if done at all sensibly (or sensitively).
The Irish border, and the lives of people around it, is the important example of that truth. But there are countless others.
The refusal of some Brexit ideologues to accept that truth - beset by a cast of mind which @rolandmcs rightly calls “simplism” - is what has got us to the mess we are now in.
The simplist view that there are easy solutions leads straight to the tendency to claim that anyone pointing out real problems must be inventing them (the example here, and see also Mogg/Nicholls).
And it leads on to darker places, as “elites”, “Remoaners”, “experts”, “traitors” are blamed for the failure to find (in fact non-existent) easy solutions.
And it is that language - with all its historical resonances - which generates the comparisons of which Charlotte was originally complaining.
