We believe there is too much rigidity. This rigidity is something that is being rarefied into the date of October 31.

The resolution says that if there is no deal departure, that will be entirely the responsibility of the United Kingdom and of course it is still bound by financial obligations, the need to respect the rights of citizens and the Good Friday Agreement.

Parliament will not give consent to any agreement that does not address these resolutions and contain them.

European Parliament President Sassoli after meeting Barnier:

“Unfortunately, The signals we are getting aren’t indicating that there is any initiative that could reopen the negotiations. That’s the way we see it and we are unhappy about that.

"We’d like there to be initiatives to discuss but unfortunately there aren’t any.

I don't think discussing the backstop is really going to get us anywhere.”

Sassoli was asked if Parliament would block a deal without backstop even if it meant no deal.

"There can't be an agreement without a backstop.

"If you don't want to talk about that it means you don't want to talk at all and there is nothing to talk about at all"
