Unpopular opinion: I love "The Princess Bride", but can we stop with this nonsense that remaking a movie erases/diminishes/insults the original film? Y'all are acting like it's been announced that all evidence of the original will be confiscated and destroyed. Simmer down.
That being said, remakes generally tend to suck, but regardless, treating film as sacrosanct and beyond reimagining is kinda the opposite of what art should be?
I'll tell ya what really pisses me off: calling a Disney remake a "live action" when it's really just digital animation. Stop doing that shit.
Plus--and I can't emphasize this enough--this position will permit me greater freedom to relentlessly mock dudebros who claim the all-woman Ghostbuster remake is somehow ruining their childhood.

While some of y’all are ranting about the, uh, “unfairness” of Shane Gillis being fired for racist “jokes”, just a quick reminder that Bowen Yang is literally the first cast member of Asian descent hired. In 2019.

The show has been on-air since 1975.
When you’re used to benefitting from a system of privilege, equality feels like oppression, etc.
Really excited to see the first trans cast member of SNL in 2050, the last season before climate change destroys NYC.

Last night, Elizabeth Warren drew a crowd of 20,000 people in NYC’s Washington Sq. Park, the largest of any candidate in the primary, so far.

I guess she never got the memo about her electability.
And on a Monday night, no less.
Excuse me, Kamala Harris *also* had a rally with at least 20,000 in attendance for her announcement in Oakland. Certainly didn’t mean to forget that.

Here's why I think this may be the case. (thread)

My first paper, with Y. Sinai in 2002, arxiv.org/abs/math/06016… proves that 3x+1 paths are a geometric Brownian motion (in a precise asymptotic sense), with drift log 3/4 < 0
2/ This suggests typical trajectories decay, and can be used to recover the fact (proved before us) that almost every seed eventually reaches a value below itself (but this cannot be iterated, since the paths could fall into a very sparse divergent trajectory). For a long time,

The World Wars never ended, neither did the Cold War, and neither will the War on Terror.

Wars based on demonizing all people "over there" as equally scum will always result in the remainder of jingiosm after they're "over".

super unpopular opinion: we love to espouse the virtues of self-care, rigid hours, strict timelines, and rail against “working too much”, when the fact is that we live in a capitalist society where another business will eat your lunch if you don’t work harder than them.
and until we derive our value from some drastically different type of economy, it’s foolish to expect that minimal effort will net you success.

hard work - and often times more work - is the only thing that will get you ahead of the pack both personally and in business.
that being said, it doesn’t mean you have to be a dick about it.
