/ We’re at @marieforleo ‘s book launch event in LA. This is what a modern book signing powered by the internet looks like
/ A few minutes to start and it’s a full on dance party. That’s Lauren on the far left
/ It’s at Skirball cultural center with about 1k attending. She’s really nailed the target demographic of 20s to 40s millennial women running small and/or online businesses. Everything is geared to them
/ cost of the event was $28 and the book costs $25 so it’s basically the price of entry. Real excitement in the air. Everyone here has something very important to them in common. It’s very moving
/ there’s a bar and merch for sale with Marie’s trademark phrase “Everything is Figuroutable”
/ That’s also the title of the book. But it’s clear this book is just a tiny part of a much bigger community and movement
/ Marie’s best known for her online course B-School which is amazing. She calls it an “acclaimed business training program.” It starting not to matter that it’s online, which is cool
/ Follow-up online course is free with bonus material that didn’t make it into book, implementation exercises, etc. Online courses are becoming essential part of promoting and monetizing books, which themselves don’t really make money
/ This feels like a new generation of online-business-for-women genre. Much more diverse than in the past, lots of swearing onstage, and Marie is quoting David Deusche and talking about CRISPR. It’s more intellectual, rigorous, practical, realistic
/ It’s an incredibly simple, but also quite powerful message: everything can be figured out (*given enough time and effort and hard work)
/ Marie said her agent first brought up idea of writing a book in 2011, she started in 2016, and it’s only now published at end of 2019. Publishing a best selling book takes many years. Essentially, it takes building a movement
/ There’s a lot of discussion about women’s rights and unique challenges, ppl of color, LatinX and LGBT causes, climate activism, etc. This social awareness is really what women-centric events bring to the online business world, which is otherwise dominated by men
