This thread made me *REALLY* think about some things.
I'll share some thoughts of my own, as @cubprospects really put some things in motion for me.
Re-sign Castellanos.

As @DSzymborski wrote, he isn't getting $100M. Who says no to 4/$69M?

You can read Dan's well-written post below: blogs.fangraphs.com/no-nicholas-ca…
I'm cool with Heyward in RF/CF, but he needs a platoon partner. Coming into Sunday, #22 posted a .270/.368/.476 line & 118 wRC+ vs. RHP (42 wRC+ vs. LHP).

If Manuel Margot (155 wRC+ in 109 PA vs. LHP) doesn't survive SDP's crowded OF, that's a guy I'd love to target.
I'd entertain the idea of bringing back Strop & Zobrist on inexpensive deals. Part of me thinks Zobrist has the skills to be a quality pinch-hitter like we used to see in the '90s (they don't really make those these days). The other FAs can bounce.
Non-tender Addison Russell.

Continue to give him and his family the type of support they need for as long as they need it. But let him grow as a baseball player elsewhere.
I'm on board with trading Albert Almora Jr. for a MiLB pitcher with options remaining, as @cubprospects suggests. Bonus points if they throw hard. Find an arm with stuff ad upside who can be molded by a rebuilt pitching infrastructure.
I saw that @sahadevsharma reported the Cubs interviewed Driveline founder Kyle Boddy for "an unspecified player development role" in the org. That's the type of new eyes on old problems I'd like to see at Wrigley. Make that happen.

And read Sahadev here: theathletic.com/1220440/2019/0…
I'm intrigued by the idea of trading Victor Caratini, Ian Happ, and pieces for Jon Gray. Change of scenery could do wonders for all parties. Get Caratini & Happ full-time PAs. Move Gray out of Coors & into the new pitching infrastructure.
I forgot Dellin Betances was a free agent this offseason. He won't get QO'd. And while I'm hesitant to pay real $ for relievers, he would be the exception to that rule. Betances probably needs a change of scenery, too.

Will Smith could also be worth actual money.
I have no interest trading Contreras. But if the Mets made Thor and Edwin Diaz available as part of a deal, then I might listen. If that type of deal went down, I'd make Yasmani Grandal a top FA priority.

Power bat + OBP skills + elite framing means he helps in multiple phases.
Jarrod Dyson as OF4 sounds like a winner, but I'm intrigued by Billy Hamilton. Imagine Albert Almora, but he is actually fast and a Gold Glove caliber CF. He is the ideal 26th man to me.

I know what you're thinking: "Why not both?"

Great question ... wish I had an answer.
I guess I should address the manager. Not gonna lie: A small part of me wishes Joe Maddon could see this thing through to the end. Then again, what we saw in 2019 might be the end. Might be good to have a clean breakup and bring in a new voice & create a clean slate.
I'm not super hip on David Ross being the manager. Someone would have to talk me into it, tbh. Last thing I want is for a World Series winner to end up like Alan Trammell in Detroit. That stunk.
With that being said, here is a short list of mgrs I'd be interested in hearing about: Raul Ibanez (was reportedly in mix for Cubs bench coach job), Mark Loretta, Carlos Beltran, John Farrell, Joe Girardi, Josh Bard (NYY bench coach).

And one name for funsies: Ron Washington.
