A beautiful quotation by George MacDonald in David Bentley Hart's #ThatAllShallBeSaved
Sadly not many quotations from George MacDonald appear in this 200 page book but #DBHart does praise George MacDonald many times.
Generally the book is void of quotations in general and I know it's not fair to criticize a book based on what it doesn't say. But where the hell are the references or quotations from Christoph Blumhardt or his father Johann?
This is an excellent short book on universalism and I like it far more than Rob Bell's Love Wins because it's rich in content. I'm familiar to all the arguments and the critical disposition towards the Reformed tradition and silence towards Protestant universalists is a negative
#DBHart has a fascinating argument in the loci of the quote above. He questions whether a person forced into salvation is really the same earthly person or a clone replacement without Continuum with the former human being.
As a reformed theologian, I naturely believe that a person must be dragged kicking and screaming out of the fire they jumped into, so it's not an objection I usually consider as real. God must say no to our no like a parent says you may not say no to me.
However David Bentley Hart makes a good point about a real change that must be done in individuals to bring them into glory to maintain that Continuum.
I don't see how a long or really long duration of time would be any different than a twinkling of an eye before the beatific view of God. Nevertheless the idea of a clone replacement requires pause.
Scientifically the physical body replaces itself cell by cell many times over a typical life span. It's the question of whether a house that had incrementally had every piece replaced is the same house.
So I appreciated #DBH's use of George MacDonald to resolve the problem, mostly by saying that no one is really saved unless we are all saved and we are not all saved until we love our neighbor enough to go back into hell for them.
Not by cylon replacements.
