Widespread support maybe but a. pointless if not for an acceptable proposal to other side and b. support may still not be a majority, particularly if negotiations required even minor modifications
Government continues to treat negotiations as if some simple exercise of proposing something which will then be a deal, not a complex balancing of different interests of your own and the other side.

The UK proposal isn't close to achieving the balance.
Arguably the UK proposal shouldn't even have been tabled given the obviously limited support in Northern Ireland risking the future of the UK, but that doesn't to be fair seem to be a factor being prioritised in Brexit handling.
