No one quite sure what happens if Johnson’s election vote fails threshold tonight
Govt expected to put down one line bill to try again tmrw with lib dem and snp support - but fair number of MPs in commons tonight scratching heads now over how solid that support really is
Some SNP MPs , like @AngusMacNeilSNP who has been public about it, think December election is a terrible idea
Concerns among opposition MPs worried about the date of election but also about the No 10 suggestion that bill they would put forward would be 'almost' identical to lib dems and snp... what does the 'almost' mean?
multiple sources adamant the dispute is not about a cross party pledge to ban campaigning in a Santa suit

Brexit Party sabre rattling is certainly tricky for the Tories, but their position today also revealing - the election campaign has started + they haven't decided where + how many candidates to stand
One Cabinet minister reckons Brexit Party actually might help them some seats because they take voters who would never vote Tory anyway from the Labour Party

Likely to be a big row about letting EU citizens vote, which might even scupper election vote tonight - worth knowing there are no other EU countries that give all EU citizens right to vote in general elections (exceptions for some Commonwealth citizens and Irish nationals)
And whether you think this is a good idea or not, and plenty do, tacking an amendment on to a vote for an election against a deadline is a hell of a way to make a big and important change to the franchise
There's an open question as to whether big suggested changes could be done in time so they might not be selected for votes anyway, in which case, it's ALL BACK ON

No 10 confirms tonight they will NOT try again to bring the Brexit Bill, the WAB back
Govt's justification for not agreeing the Lib Dems date of 9th is that they are not sure they can get the bill through in time, and Northern Ireland Budget Bill has to be passed before Parliament can be dissolved
Let's see if the smaller opposition parties can find an accommodation with them on date once they they and we all actually see the bill and black and white - the track record for this stuff is ghastly, but this might just about be the moment

Right. It's going to be the longest day of parliamentary drama you have ever experienced. And it kicks off now.
The Speaker, John Bercow, is currently deciding what to do about the election for the new Speaker, given it is now ramming right up against the election debate.
Basically it comes down to: Do they hold the Speaker's election before or after the election? Bercow said he was standing down on October 31st. But some want him to hold out for after the election.

Election drama may come to a head, soon. We should know by tomorrow what EU’s thinking on extension. If 31 Jan, Johnson will seek election and Corbyn has no good reason to refuse him. If it’s earlier, we may need new legislation or caretaker gov to force election and new request.
I don’t see how we can put this off any longer and I don’t know what a lot of Labour MPs think will improve if we wait for the bill to progress any further or wait for Brexit to happen.
Let’s say customs-union amendment goes through. Johnson can’t accept it and so we have an election. Let’s say amendment doesn’t go through and bill fails. Will have to be election then too. And if bill passes unamended? Brexit happens and Johnson calls election, triumphant.

Right. Here is my analysis of the votes tonight. Trust me, if you understand the background and you’re pro EEA, be encouraged. (Thread).
Firstly, there was hugely tactical voting. For example, the Independent group abstained voted against any options involving the EEA, because for all their words, they are about stopping Brexit. If we crash out, let's remind them of that. Secondly, the Eustice option is unpopular
because it involves leaving under May's deal (only it doesn't, but that's a different story). Thirdly, the two "hard brexit" options, Baron and @MarcusFysh were destroyed. There is no way anything with ERG on it will pass. The Baron option had the 2nd highest number of votes

Let’s add a little context to the discussion of voting security in the US. To do that, I’m going to do something Computer Scientists are bad at - I’m going to talk about history. Specifically, let’s look at the Help America #Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. 1/
The reason to talk about HAVA is to start recognizing some of the challenges of paper ballot-based voting. HAVA came about largely because paper ballots were proving to be extremely difficult to manage. 2/
For instance, paper ballots are expensive (they’re not printed on standard college-rule paper), and they’re not reusable across elections. You’ve also got to try and guess who is going to show up to the poll, and how many ballots you’ll need in each language. 3/
