Election drama may come to a head, soon. We should know by tomorrow what EU’s thinking on extension. If 31 Jan, Johnson will seek election and Corbyn has no good reason to refuse him. If it’s earlier, we may need new legislation or caretaker gov to force election and new request.
I don’t see how we can put this off any longer and I don’t know what a lot of Labour MPs think will improve if we wait for the bill to progress any further or wait for Brexit to happen.
Let’s say customs-union amendment goes through. Johnson can’t accept it and so we have an election. Let’s say amendment doesn’t go through and bill fails. Will have to be election then too. And if bill passes unamended? Brexit happens and Johnson calls election, triumphant.
Right now there are too many moving parts, too many things that can go wrong for us the longer we wait, and not enough votes to secure referendum. Lab waverers would only ever have backed one if no-deal was looming. No-deal is now off the table. We are victims of our own success.
