The Green New Deal uses some legalese to describe its coalition of "frontline and vulnerable communities," says @adam_tooze.

Almost bizarre to see FDR and enviro mantel invoked for this very different coalition.
The confusion at the launch over foundational enviro issues like what is the new coalition's stance on nuclear power and carbon capture is telling of how this is a different movement, says @adam_tooze.

Sanders, with his longer record, has helped reanchor these concerns.
The China Shock in the Midwest plus collapse of coal mines in Kentucky v. Corporatist smoother transition in Germany shows how much more poorly US manages adjustment process, says @adam_tooze
Sanders committing to be a good global citizen a la Germany and do multilateralism stuff completely dodges the power politics of engaging China, says @adam_tooze
The GND European left is more sophisticated in its approach to financialization. Finance constrains democratic action and funds fossil fuels, so much be countered with capital controls and a new Bretton Woods, says @adam_tooze
As a result, European financial regulators are basically in the same place as Mike Bloomberg, says @adam_tooze.
One of the reasons US could anchor currencies to dollar at Bretton Woods was that dollar denominated petrol. Keynes' global currency failed, says @adam_tooze. UK campaigners actually center problem of #petrodollars
GND campaigners praise FDR's mobilization of arsenal building to win WWII & the Marshall Plan. But what won the war was Stalin plus the Manhattan Project, and the Golden Age of capitalism after fueled by competition with the USSR. What are the analogues today? Asks @adam_tooze
Obama's centering of China in his climate plan was more serious about the biggest challenge, says @adam_tooze. The GND doesn't have anything comparable.
Phases of climate crisis, per @adam_tooze:
1. 1980s a convo only between developed countries.
2. In 1990s, developing world joins, with world split between annexes.
3. This produces Kyoto failure
4. Reorganization into big oligarchic G4 at Copenhagen: US, EU, China, India
But where do "the rest " come in? For instance, while markets explain a lot of puzzle (eg finance), many of the key players are stateowned oil companies, who follow a geoeconomic logic, says @adam_tooze.
Private fossil fuel companies can be liquidated and shareholders take the hit. In petro states, "shareholders" are citizens. What happens to them, asks @adam_tooze ?
The UK campaigners call for a Carbon Army, using military specialists and engineers to decarbonize - and helping vulnerable evacuate. Sanders is going in a different direction, and may alienate military in process, says @adam_tooze
The major dilemma the GND will face is how to navigate our collective dependence on the Chinese Communist Party for decarbonization, ends @adam_tooze. How to accommodate?
In Latin America, petrol revenues are used to avoid redistribution questions, points out discussant @llchristyll. How can decarbonization (possibly low growth) be achieved without dealing with redistribution?
I'm drawn to seeing the CCP as the analogue to Stalin on WWII, says @llchristyll. But re: the war on carbon, can you do good wars on things?

@adam_tooze: military expenditure during Cold War actually more important than WWII.
In the same way that the GND is managing the Teamsters and racially diverse groups as part of their coalition, says @adam_tooze. But the military is the most working class and racially diverse organization in the country. How can they be brought on board?
