Here we go...I hope this is one of the last fire weather THREADS I'll make in the next few days...but we have a pretty big event starting NOW....let's go. 1/
Winds are starting pretty early in the day for the N. Sacramento Valley (Redding, Anderson, Red Bluff, Corning Etc. with gusts up to 39mph so far...it will continue. 2/
This is going to be another ripping, tense 36-48 hours for California as we see the state put everything on hold to get through windy fire weather...but this may be it for awhile. 3/
I do have SERIOUS concerns for Southern California (where I grew up) because this is TOP LEVEL wind you will ever see here with canyon gusts up to 80mph+ So stuff is going to break...lots of things just from wind alone. 4/
I grew up at the bottom of one of these canyons (Cucamonga) and trust me these are scary as hell. One night we had a tree fall right on the house while we were sleeping. Often we lose power, and the area would be destroyed by wind alone 5/
Trees into fences, entire lines of power poles down, shingles gone, outdoor furniture into neighbor's pools. What is going to go down will be among the highest of these types of damaging wind days and nights, like I said scary 6/
The problem here is that it's also PRIME fire season. It has not rained in any reasonable way since May (this is normal...climate...there was some summer thunderstorm rain but no green grass yet) So everything is ready to burn 7/
Remember we have seen quite a few of these in a row and each time it dries out the vegetation a little more...@RobElvington is excellent at explaining this...so we are in a tough spot for the entire state. 8/
So this is on our plate in Northern California tonight first before this stuff heads to SoCal. People in the dark for 3-4 days and it begins again. 40-60mph gusts up high and pretty strong in the valley as well...peak is middle of night. 9/
Communication and risk is always a problem in the early morning hours and it's possible some community will get the door-to-door "get out now" scenario with this event unfolding today and especially tonight. 10/
Once we get to tomorrow about sunrise onward it gets better and calmer hour by hour until later Wednesday for NorCal we are done with it...thank goodness. 11/
The most positive thing I see is....nothing. No major wind coming back. No fire condiitons...just quiet unremarkable weather that we absolutely need to get back to normal. 12/
I want to end this with a few thoughts. It's easy from outside this area to think living in California is a death wish. Everything on the news (including details in this thread) make it seem like every day is a looming disaster 13/
The images and scenes lately are quite frankly shocking to everybody...even us Californians...But this is just a rough moment in time. We all have these...anywhere you live it's just our time at the moment. 14/
Living here is not easy. It is expensive, there are fires, earthquakes, floods, droughts, blizzards, avalanches, mudslides, massive swell that erodes the beaches, even the odd tornado...but it is also HOME to 40 million of us. 15/
Most days are not like this. Most days the weather really is great and the opportunities here are truly incredible. A few times last year I went to work for a full shift, drove up and went skiing and was home in time for dinner. 16/
There are things here that quite honestly only happen here and as bad as the bad days are it's still a place I am raising my family...happily. 17/
So think of positive thoughts you can send our way...we'll need them for the next few days as we try and get through some trying times to say the least. END.
