113 years ago today on 3 November 1906 an International Radiotelegraph Conference in Berlin selects "SOS" (· · · – – – · · ·) distress signal as the worldwide standard for help. In popular usage it is associated with phrases such as "Save Our Souls" and "Save Our Ship". SOS was
a German government maritime radio regulation adopted effective 1 April 1905, becoming a worldwide standard when it was included in the service regulations of the first International Radiotelegraph Convention signed on 3 November 1906, which became effective on 1 July 1908. SOS
remained the maritime radio distress signal until 1999, when it was replaced by the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. SOS is still recognized as a standard distress signal that may be used with any signaling method.

98 years ago today on 5 December 1921 after protracted negotiations, the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George gave the Irish parliamentary representatives a deadline to accept or reject the terms of the proposed Anglo-Irish treaty. In the words of Lloyd George, rejection

After 40 years in practice as a lawyer it's difficult at times to be shocked, but I received a shocking reply from a landlord this afternoon. The Landlord is a "professional" accountant. I'd written on behalf of the tenant about the fact that the tenant has had no heating for
13 MONTHS in a rented property. Believe it or not the landlord saw nothing wrong in responding that the tenant has "done nothing to help the situation herself" and after 13 months explains the failure by saying "We have found it very difficult to get a plumber" - over 13 MONTHS?
All of this comes after the landlord had threatened eviction in the summer on the basis of an alleged intention to sell, which was challenged leading to the landlord withdrawing the Termination Notice. Shocking.

When the decision was made to open up the Gardai to female recruits in 1959 the Dáil (Irish Parliament) was told by one parliamentarian that female Garda recruits should be “horse-faced, they should not
be too good looking; they should be just plain women and not targets for marriage". (Until 1973 when Ireland joined the EEC, female recruits had to retire on marriage and there was no question of "living in sin" while serving as a member).

Forty years ago today on November 3, 1979, five anti-racist members of the Communist Workers' Party were murdered by Klan members in Greensboro, North Carolina: César Cauce, Jim Waller, Sandy Smith, Mike Nathan, and Bill Sampson.
This memorial in Greensboro's Maplewood Cemetery for the individuals killed in the Greensboro Massacre is one of the most powerful sites of remembrance by the American Left that I've ever seen.
César Cauce worked at the Duke University Hospital and organized medical workers to form an AFSCME local (a campaign Duke successfully defeated). Only twenty-five years old, Cauce was a Cuban immigrant who had graduated magna cum laude with a history degree from Duke.

Thread: Six years ago today, I found out that I have #MultipleSclerosis. A battle I wasn’t prepared for, but with the help of my family and friends, I continue to fight.

I hope my story will help someone else with #MS or a loved one of someone with MS.
I’ve always been in love with athletics and exercise, I played EVERYTHING growing up and that didn’t change as I entered adulthood.

I remained a very active person, so when my body began to feel “off”, I knew something was wrong.
One morning I woke up and my legs didn’t really have sensation, sort of like “pins and needles” when you’ve been sitting too long.

I didn’t think much of it, and I decided to go play football that day anyway. Most of the game I felt fine, but then my legs felt sensation-less.

Today actually makes it over two decades since the sad killing of Ken Saro-Wiwa by the Nigerian State under Abacha alongside 8 others: Felix Nuate, Baronem Kobel, Saturday Dobee, Daniel Gbooko, Nordu Eawu, Baribor Bera, Paul Levura and John Kpuinee.

I think it’s worth a Thread.
This thread captures history from various perspectives all blended together to reveal a fuller picture.

It shows that Saro-Wiwa was also human like any of us but he was exceptionally courageous and dogged in spite of his human flaws.
Saro-Wiwa was a diminutive man who invariably always smoked a pipe and was considered quite brilliant.

He wrote a popular play which was adapted for TV when we were younger “Basi and Company”.

He was from Ogoni - an oil-producing area in Rivers State which has several villages.
