Hey everyone, I know we've been seeing a lot of arrests concerning the MTA and I just wanted to make sure you know how the MTA is funded so you see how ridiculous the situation is.
So according to this report, out of the $15.3 billion annual revenue, $6.2 billion comes from fares. That's a combination of metrocard sales and ticket sales for the Metro North and the Long Island railroad.
From personal experience, if you ride the Metro North and you don't purchase a ticket beforehand, they sell you a ticket on the train itself for an additional fee. If you don't have any money, they give you a bill. I've never gotten beaten up on the Metro North for being broke.
So please understand that it's not in strictly metrocard sales. They make other money.
They collect $1.9 billion from tolls. If you don't pay a toll and you don't have EZ pass, they send you a bill using your license plate number. They're very diligent in collecting.
So after all the money they make from tolls, metrocards, and railroad tickets, they still have even more money coming in. $5.3 billion of our tax dollars are dedicated to funding the MTA.
So even if you've never been trampled by Yankee fans on the 4 train while trying to get home from work in the summer time, there's still a very good chance that you are paying for this wonderful system.
If you own a vehicle, part of your registration fees and your gas purchases goes towards the MTA. There's no way to avoid putting money in the MTA's pocket if you commute in this city.
If you own a mortgage in the city, part of that goes towards the MTA. Seriously. Even while you sit at home, you're paying for the MTA.
There's also a "Payroll Mobility Tax" that employers and self employed people pay in this city. That goes towards the MTA.
If you catch a yellow cab in NYC, there's a 50 cent fee that goes to the MTA as well.
But even after ALL that, the MTA also gets subsidies! Our wonderful state has a mass transportation program that gives financial aid to the MTA. $546 million. Yeah.
Oh and the city shoots them another $677 million too.
I say all this to say that no matter what, New Yorkers are paying for the MTA. Even if someone hops a turnstile, they're still paying for the trains to be run. Stop playing poor people for the issues the MTA has. We're doing all we can.
Oh and make sure to see what your local politicians are doing about these injustices. You pay these people. Make sure they're doing their jobs.
I'm running for NY State Assembly - District 87 (Parkchester, Castle Hill, Unionport, Van Nest, and West Farms). I appreciate all the support. Make sure you follow me for updates. This is my campaign ad:

"The MTA is hiring 500 new transit police to crack down on assaults and fare evasion on city subways and buses." Please understand that these are not NYPD officers. The MTA police is a completely different police force and they have different rules.
Currently, the MTA officers that Governo Cuomo reassigned to the subways are not required to wear body cameras. NYPD officers are required to wear body cameras. Senator Ramos recently proposed a bill that will require the MTA officers in our subways to wear cameras.
So James O'Neill (who is stepping down from the role of NYPD Commissioner) disagrees with Governor Cuomo about rising crime on the subway system. He claims that crime is down.
"According to NYPD data, crime in the subways has actually dropped 3 percent year-to-date through Oct. 27, compared to 2018, according to the latest crime statistics from the MTA."
So if ovetall crime is down but police presence is increasing, it sounds as if the government is primarily there to go after fare evaders. Please don't sugarcoat it or try to insult our intelligence.
It seems like there's a lot of disconnect between Albany, the NYPD, and the MTA chairmen but black and brown people are the only ones really losing.
