Hey everyone, I know it's a bit late but my GOTY 2018 turns out to be Lutter (NES, 1989) which questionably mixes a Hydlide-style action RPG with Lode Runner and completely nails it. like, Kobe, buckets, it's extremely good.
you ever load up a game you've never heard of for a computer older than you and instantly need to spend the rest of your night playing it? that shit is Special. what a good game.
the way Lutter is assembled is remarkable. the game takes place in a huge array of single, non-scrolling rooms, like an early 80s arcade game, but they're connected by doors that pass through to a second world on the flip side, and I think it's all internally consistent
if you go through a door, move three screens over and go through another door, you'll be where you would be if you'd gone three screens over without flipping sides. it all forms an interconnected maze
you often go through a door to find yourself in a sealed off part of a room you'd been in earlier, providing access to a button or key you'd seen but didn't know how to get. It's brilliant imo
