I just read part of that Scorcese op-ed and I have to say I feel very vindicated in having compared auteurs to franchises, despite some Very Movie Guys yelling at me, because it turns out that the auteur, he agrees.
It's interesting, though, how subjective this really is.

I mean, he talks about this but when I think about Wes Anderson, I don't think "something new and different each time".
With Marvel, we have two Iron Man movies directed by Jon Favreau... one made with relative freedom as his picture and one with more arc welding for the shared universe... and then one made by Shane Black. And the Black one is ASOLUTELY a Shane Black movie, and different for it.
I mean, it's a Shane Black movie and it's a Iron Man movie, and there's no other movie that is both of those things.

Kenneth Branagh directed Thor 1. Taika Waititi directed Thor 3. There was another one in between them. Are they the same?
Meanwhile, every Wes Anderson movie is a Wes Anderson move. They're not the same movie, but they're all Wes Anderson movies.

The heart of the matter is -- as Scorcese says in the piece -- that he grew up in the wrong generation, appreciating the wrong movies, to really "feel" the Marvel movies, and he's understandably bitter that the industry is leaving him behind.
But the idea that there's no stakes, no journey, no mystery, and that nothing different ever happens and no one puts their individual artistic stamp on it...

I mean, that last one isn't even true about actual theme park rides. People design those things. Artists.
They're all "superhero movies" but this one's a heist, this one's war movie, this one's a political thriller, this one's a space opera, this one's neo-noir, etc.

Anyway.

Guy who came up watching and then built his reputation making Very Not Marvel movies isn't a big fan of Marvel movies. Flavors and tastes. That's all it is. He says so himself, even while taking some defensive potshots. Flavors and tastes.
