A coup has taken place in #Bolivia. Morales has stepped down after the head of the military *asked* him to do so. Notably, police declared a mutiny on Friday. The military asking Morales to step down seemed to be the last straw following weeks of protest. Thread/1
However, earlier today the OAS announced that following its investigations, they found clear manipulations of the voting system in Oct 20 vote. Morales then called for new elections. The opposition rejected that, calling instead, again, for Morales resignation./2
Whatever one calls what is happening – and I believe a coup is an accurate term to describe it – the reactionary right is swiftly filling the power vacuum, with racist groups in the streets burning wiphalas, attacking MASistas, & ransacking Morales’ own house, & gov't buildings.
For example, Camacho, a right-wing civic leader from Santa Cruz, just literally entered the presidential palace with a bible and a resignation letter for Morales, and ordered the police and military to apprehend Morales, who is reportedly in the Chapare./4
A number of opposition and dissident groups have demanded Morales step for not respecting the results of a 2016 national referendum that barred Morales from running again, abuses of power, corruption, and much more./5
But it’s the far-right and racist groups among the opposition that appear most likely to take the reigns in this decisive moment. No to the coup! /6
