The most destructive hurricanes have become much more frequent.

This result is extremely robust to different input data.
ND of ICAT: an increase of 3.2x per century for ND>22bn.
-This is the data that PielkeJr argues has quality issues. But as you will see it does not matter for the results.
ND of W19: An increase of 2.6x per century (ND>11bn).

- PielkeJr is coauthor on the W19 data set. All of his criticisms fall flat on this data set.
ATD of ICAT: An increase of 3.3x per century (ATD>1200 km2)

- ATD is my new Area of Total Destruction normalization scheme. I show it has better signal to noise than the conventional ND scheme.
ATD of W19: An increase of 3.8x per century (ATD>834 km2)
All this is in the paper materials. It is disingenious to pretend that any issues with ICAT has any impact on the analysis.

It is frustrating how many people are convinced.
The paper is mostly about the new ATD normalization scheme. I am not making new base damage data. If there are any quality issues with the base damage data, then it would handicap both normalization schemes in an equal fashion.

The largest hurricane damage events are getting more frequent. -Also in the Weinkle&PielkeJr et al. normalized damage estimates.
They argue that some small events are missing in the early part of the record, -they guestimate their ND value. Unfortunately we can see that this has a profound effect on the distribution which looks sick (pre-1940, ND<1bn).
It is not surprising that the early part of the record looks strange. E.g. They use the damage from "Claudette 2003" to fill-in the missing values for 18 other storms.

1/n This panel dataset (i.e. a survey design wherein respondents are re-interviewed across time) took forever to code/arrange--it's broken into like 12 different files--but I now have some interesting new data to share. Much of it confirms what I've already reported elsewhere..

A side note on the new British elections, the Fixed Term Parliament Act, and the difficulty of importing institutions that are supposed to work better into very different contexts.

Britain traditionally allowed the Prime Minister to call new elections at will.

There was some evidence that this gave governments an incumbency advantage (since they could time reelection), led to political instability, and made policy implementation more difficult.

Hence...
...many reformers and political scientists advocated for the U.K. to adopt fixed parliamentary terms, like most other European countries.

The coalition government between Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, for reasons of its own, implemented this in the Fixed Parliament Act.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
