As an experienced policy analyst, I suppose I shouldn't say that I am paying no attention to the proposals of the various Democratic candidates. The reason is that none of them will be implemented as they are proposed.
First, Republicans are likely to control the Senate and bottle up every proposal requiring legislation to implement. There is no reason to think Mitch McConnell won't do to the next Democratic president exactly what he did to Obama.
Second, even if the Democrats get control of the Senate it will be by the skin of their teeth. Holding every Democrat on every vote will be difficult--there is too much to be gained by holding out and demanding a special deal. Joe Manchin is a weak link.
Third, nominees often drop or downplay proposals that are popular in primaries but don't poll well in the general. The platform process gives them a graceful way of doing so.
Fourth, the next president is certain to be confronted by landmines left behind by Trump that will take time to clean up before any new policies can be enacted. It is certain that the budget deficit will suddenly become an issue again. Maybe a recession as well.
Finally, even on issues the next president pushes forward with, thorough analysis by the implementing agencies will almost certainly find problems and constraints that are not now apparent, requiring revision and modification.
The proposals of the candidates at this point in the campaign are really just marketing or signaling devices telling us about their general philosophy and approach to the issues. That's fine, but treating their details as if they are etched in stone is foolish.
Personally, I'd like to see some discussion of policies that can realistically be implemented quickly. For example, repeal every Trump tariff on day one. Also, rescind every single Trump executive order on 1-20-21. Furthermore, ensure that every Trump appointee is gone by noon.
