1/ The first version of @Baremetrics is now open source!

I built this over the course of a few weeks back in 2013 really to just scratch an itch. Turns out other folks had that itch too. 🙂

2/ We no longer use anything from this initial version I built, but we're publishing it to show how little you need to get started building a business.
3/ From a code-quality standpoint, this stuff is terrible. 🙃 But the reality is, the quality of code doesn't matter when you're just trying to prove an idea. Once I proved the idea, I promptly hired engineers who actually knew what they were doing. 🎉
4/ If you're an engineer trying figure out what to build or how to build it, I encourage you to just ship something. Don't get caught up in having "perfect" code. Just get your product out there and start getting real feedback from real customers.
5/ Hat tip to @shl for the idea to release it!

@shl 6/ The most interesting file (at least to me) is the Stat model where I just shoved every method for generating each metric.

Oh how naive I was in regards to how complex these really were to accurately generate. 😂

1/ Massive lesson learned today regarding running a remote company: you must register as a foreign entity in every state you have employees.

I incorrectly assumed that using a PEO absorbed all the tax nonsense.
2/ It absorbs it for payroll taxes. It does NOT absorb the taxes/fees every state charges for the "privilege" of hiring someone that lives there.

And boy do states love to get greedy with those charges.
3/ I'll be writing checks for the following amounts. Roughly 90% of these are purely late fees/penalties.

Texas: $3,666 (2 employees)
Tennessee: $2,026 (1 employee)
California: $816 (1 employee)

1/ Over the years one of the most requested data connections for @Baremetrics has been the mobile app stores.

Most companies don't have all their revenue data in one place, especially those with mobile apps, so it's been hard to get a full picture of MRR, LTV, churn, growth.
2/ We've had support for Stripe, Braintree and Recurly for years and now we're adding Apple's @AppStore Connect as a new data source. So, if your company accepts subscription payments via in-app purchases in the App Store, we've now got you covered!
3/ And if you've got some payments coming in via the App Store and others via, say, Stripe...we've still got you covered! Connect as many data sources as you'd like!

1/ Why wife runs a community kitchen program at a local school here and texted this to me yesterday.
2/ Puker 1: Dared to chug 3 bottles of water followed by bottle of gatorade. Quickly this does not sit well & he almost instantly projectile vomits directly across the table on the kid across from him.

Puker 2: I mean, he just got vomited on. Of course HE then starts vomiting.
3/ Puker 3: A girl two tables down witnesses the carnage and begins projectile vomiting as well...poor weak stomach.

What'd they have for lunch? Chicken Pot Pie.

One of my daughters, who witnessed it: "The puke looked like vegetable soup." 😂

So the first version of Etsy (2005) was PHP talking to Postgres, written by someone learning PHP as he was doing it, which was all fine. Postgres was kind of an idiosyncratic choice for the time, but it didn’t matter yet and anyway that’s a different story.
I started in the long shadow of “v2,” a catastrophic attempt to rewrite it, adding a Python middle layer. They had asked a Twisted consultant what to do, and the Twisted consultant said they needed a Twisted middle layer (go figure).

@mhkeller @gabrieldance We felt it was important not to shy away from showing this material, horrific as it is, since it's central to understanding the story. Straight away, though, it presents a technical challenge: How can we load and render thousands of images almost immediately upon page load?
