Exclusive: Humans are being placed in suspended animation for the first time. In a clinical trial in the US doctors are holding humans at death’s door for a few hours to find out if it’s possible to fix traumatic injuries that would otherwise cause death newscientist.com/article/222400…
A team led by Samuel Tisherman @UMmedschool has already placed at least one person in suspended animation. He tells @NewScientist it was “a little surreal” when they first did it. Read the incredible scoop by @HVThomson newscientist.com/article/222400…
Speaking to @newscientist about the planned trial in 2014, Tisherman said “we are suspending life but we don’t like to call it suspended animation because it sounds like science fiction. So we call it emergency preservation and resuscitation (EPR)” newscientist.com/article/mg2212…
EPR involves rapidly cooling the patient to 10-15°C by replacing all of their blood with ice-cold saline. The patient’s brain activity almost completely stops. Surgeons then have two hours to fix the patient’s injuries before they are warmed up again and their heart restarted
Where else are people being cryogenically frozen? In Comfort, Texas, a disaster-proof complex will house 50,000 frozen people with plans to bring them back from the dead – and will help others to stay alive newscientist.com/article/mg2313…
From freezers in the basement to sheds in the garden, cryonics and the promise of a second life has captured many imaginations. Here’s a visual tour of the weird world of the cryogenically frozen
newscientist.com/article/209507…
Brains resurrected after death, communications with people in comas and advances in cryogenics all suggest that life's end is less final than we thought. The line between life and death is now more blurred than ever. Read more in @newscientist this week
