The intelligence community inspector general deemed a whistleblower complaint about a “promise” Trump made to a foreign power to be of such “urgent concern” that he informed Congress of the complaint’s existence himself rather than trust intelligence leaders to do so.
Especially in light of the president’s well-established recklessness on intel matters, these actions by the whistleblower and the inspector general are extraordinary and suggest that Trump may have acted in egregious opposition to American interests even by his own low standards.
This does indeed create a complicated situation because the president has broad power in dealing with foreign powers as he sees fit, including sharing classified information, which may or may not be the issue at hand in this case.

Trump has made clear his intention to use racism as his 2020 campaign strategy. Are other Republican officials going to stay quiet or dance around the issue that whole time? How did defending such a basic American value — equality — become so hard for these guys?
Seriously. When was the last time you heard a Republican official make a full-throated defense of equality? Our whole system of self-government is predicated upon the truth that we’re all of equal worth, yet they literally cannot even say that word.
This reflects profound intellectual and moral corruption of GOP leadership supported by a segment of the party that has expanded under Trump’s leadership and — even while recognizing its preexisting problems — made the party unrecognizable and harmful to the nation’s interests.

This is truly a dangerous abuse of power. Barr will selectively release sensitive information, as he did with Mueller’s report, to shape a favorable narrative for Trump and impede the intelligence community’s ability to collect intel on foreign threats that assist the president.
Attorney General Barr has no business knowing what assets CIA has in Russia. It’s absurd and inappropriate for him to even ask. Only in a world in which he’s empowered beyond his official capacity by the president would he have the audacity to pursue this information.
Trump is using Barr as his willing proxy to obstruct and chill U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies from collecting information that exposes his foreign backing and other corruption. He may succeed, which is why Congress must use its powers to protect the country.
