50 years ago today...was my bar mitzvah. The bar mitzvah signals beginning your life as a man. The 50th anniversary of your bar mitzvah...not so much.

Final point: My bar mitzvah speech, delivered from the bimah at Temple Sinai in Summit, New Jersey, was a protest against the Vietnam War and a call for peace. As my sister notes, a foreign policy commentator right from the start.

Sometimes I really feel like I am losing it as the evidence piles up about the connections between Trump 2016 and Brexit and Russia interfering across Europe and no one in power cares to focus on the big picture...
...that Russia is waging an active, on-going war against Western democracies, the Western alliance and the post-WWII international order and we are passively letting it happen to us (or, in the case of Trump, Johnson, Farage & Co. actively supporting it.)
It seems so clear. The threat and the damage done seems so great. And it is so misleading to view each front in this war as separate and not as part of the whole, as a tactical advance and not part of a greater strategy. And, what's more, I'm just one voice among many...

Whoever decided that it would be a good idea to try to upstage the impeachment hearings with a press event with a foreign autocrat who has just attacked an American ally and who is directly responsible for serial human rights abuses, who is contemptuous of democracy...
...and of this president, who is collaborating closely with American enemies and rivals undermining the NATO alliance and the stability of the Middle East, who just with Trump gave the biggest gift to ISIS that it has received since its founding...
..and who represents a country w/which Trump has numerous, compromising financial ties (and which had dubious ties to many on team Trump including former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn)...whoever thought that was a good idea, must be a very bad, not very smart president.

Many years ago today, I thought I’d survived the worst day of my life already. I was wrong. I had taken my kids and ran as the fear of being where we were became unbearable. I was torn away from my kids by police who were “just doing their jobs.”
I had done wrong in a place of desperation that someone decided to keep punishing me for, and they found how they could punish me irreparably. Police were as compassionate as they could be. They understood what they were doing was awful. But they had orders.
I am privileged. Family. Enough money. Friends. An attorney. I speak English. I am American. During the night I panicked. I sobbed until my head hurt. During the day I waited at my lawyer’s office until they opened to see if I could do anything that day to get me back to my kids.

Happy Father’s Day...

Those are words I’ll never be able to say to my dad.

Haven’t been able to for 11 years now.

Painful yes, but crying won’t bring him back.

I remember where I was 17 years ago today. I was working as a power line tree clearance trimmer and my two man crew was doing a couple of trouble tickets before returning to regular maintenance trimming.
As we were heading to the jobsite, I heard something about an airport being closed. I turned up the radio and I listened intently as the radio relayed news of two planes into the towers. My partner just kept saying "that's f'd up and I said we're under attack.
I told my partner that as long as we had the radio, we would stay and work, but if we lost that, all Hell was breaking loose and we were leaving to find our families. He agreed. We checked in every few minutes and heard the towers collapse, started hearing about the Pentagon.
