A debate on hypotheticals versus situational awareness. Key to keeping Britain safe is not one of reacting out of fear but of taking appropriate action with force if necessary based upon current information and forward planning ... what horror! Press the button, nuke 'em now! ->
... the problem with this type of debate is it lends itself to spin and "strongman" politics. That desire to confidentially exclaim "I would press the button" or "I would order the action" to such hypotheticals should ban you for life from ever holding such a position ...
... the problem is those soundbites sound so much better than assessing the situation, determine what action is appropriate based upon the situation and forward planning before taking any action.

Personally, I'm glad to hear someone talk about thinking before military action.

Me : Hmmm ... not good for society. Is that what you mean?
X : You mean you'll be impacted by it?
Me : Oh no, well ... yes in a positive way but that's not the point. I'd rather see us takes step to resolve issues in society.
X : Why positive?
Me : Oh, I'll benefit from tax cuts the Conservatives will bring. I'm fine with hard brexit. It's not me who will lose out with privatisation of the NHS or increasing University tuition fees. I've got a £100K+ set aside for the wee lads education. But ...
... society will lose out. This is what the election is about. I'm fine with paying more tax etc as long as we aim to build a better and fairer society. It's the collective national interest over individual.
X : What about the environment?
Me : Ditto. Needs a collective approach.

It's late and I sense the black dog approaches. The curse of my mind, an overwhelming feeling of what is the point, what have I done, a feeling of pointlessness that no amount of explanation overcomes. The misery that precedes the next burst of energy. I welcome and I loathe it.
I have a physical space that I can shut myself away from the world, I have geared my life to this, it's part of who I am, it's what makes me. It is not rational, it's some process of the mind that makes no obvious sense. A self inflicted misery with no reason or logic ...
... but in the end there is beauty in the process, a sort of re-finding of oneself, a resetting of one's views. It's a bizarre thing where almost the body just decides the mind needs to reset. You can't control it, this just happens. C'est la vie.

Me : That's good news. The more the better. You're trying to create a community, a space for your work to exist in. Do you seek irrelevance?
X : No
Me : Then open it up.
X : Can't I get some VC to sponsor or invest in me?
Me : You're more likely to get someone with capital to steal your idea, cut yourself out of a market and never expand it. Entire markets are lost over legal squabbles and attempts to "own" stuff ... see Unix.

So let's chat about "realism" in SFF (particularly sci-fi), and how the status quo and rules the majority use to judge what's considered possible or not in sci-fi are hella biased
So what is SFF? It's speculative fiction, which contains elements that don't exist in the real world (like magic, new technologies, etc.)
In sci-fi, the term for those kinds of elements is a "novum" (as coined by Darko Suvin) - a new thing that is a key part of the fiction
Because of the "science" part of the sci-fi, the novum is usually based around technology or other sciences
Now, Suvin argues that a novum must be connected to history, is scientific in nature, has a rational explanation, and is logical

3/ We now know (as I suspected at the time) that Miller & Steve Bannon pulled a series of all-nighters writing the disastrous first #muslimban--without consulting any lawyers, let alone anyone from the agencies which would be responsible for it. Keep that in mind as we proceed.
