Yesterday 4 JNCHES (#FourFights) negotiators and @UCU's Head of HE met UCEA. That UCEA met us is down to the strength of our ballot results + absolutely massive strike action currently underway. We need to *hold the line* and *grow* this action: it's *effective* /1 #UCUstrike
We spent ~2.5 hours with UCEA articulating all four grounds of dispute very fully, making clear how interconnected they are, and why it is so vital we turn this increasingly toxic sector (which *should* be so different, so open and inspiring to work within) around. #UCUstrike /2
*Right now* UCEA are consulting university leaders on what might be offered to solve the dispute. A written response is promised early next week. Hold the line! *GROW* the line: know that physical and digital/virtual picket lines *do* collectively strengthen our hand #UCUstrike/3
When your VC and senior leadership team look out their windows, we need them to see our picket lines as a physical manifestation of our disappointment in them, and their disconnection from us, the workers who keep the place going. There is no university without us. #UCUstrike /4
Same goes for online. Everyone can hold firm on the digital and virtual picket lines, even if attending physical pickets is difficult*. Our online pickets reveal + articulate righteous rage over decimated working conditions and pay, and our future income (pensions). #UCUstrike /5
*Branches must proactively work with members to make in-person picketing accessible to all those who'd love to be there. Here's one of our seated picketers who asked to be a 'poster picketer' for accessible picketing (pic with permission, anonymity respected) #UCUstrike /6
Both negotiating teams, for #FourFights (JNCHES) and #USS (SWG), have made abundantly clear that we're keen to negotiate. Negotiations need to be meaningful. Keep motivating those senior managements to listen and engage! #UCUstrike #UCUStrikesBack /7
Here's the JNCHES negotiating team's statement from yesterday in full (image descriptions summarise each chunk of text): #UCUstrike /8 Yesterday negotiators met UCEA for the 1st time since our pay & equality ballot opened, despite repeated requests to meet before the beginning of industrial action. It's clear UCU's strong ballot result&the prospect of solid industrial action which brought UCEA to the table; we thank our members for strong & vibrant support which has had & will continue to have an impact on these discussions. In the meeting, we made it clear that UCU members expect progress on all aspects of the claim, and pressed the employers' representatives to improve their offer on each of the four interconnected areas of pay and working conditions. UCEA have agreed to return to their member institutions, and have committed to a written response early next week.
While pleased that this consultation is occurring, that it is happening against the backdrop of ongoing industrial action is a sign of a significant disconnect between management & staff who make up HE institutions. We advised UCEA to strongly encourage their membership to engage with staff on picket lines, to listen to what working conditions are truly like in our sector, in order to inform their responsesWe will communicate again when we are in a position to do so.
We owe this to each other and to ourselves (our past, present, AND future selves). Let's seize the opportunity to make ourselves heard, together. #UCUStrikesBack /9
One more thing:
Thank you *so much* to every person who has picketed so far. When we go into negotiations we know you’re out there being strong and mighty! #UCUstrike #UCUStrikesBack #BringAFriendToThePicket!
