With this in mind, I have a few suggestions for good holiday gifts and welcome same...
First, it must be said, that shopping local and small and without shipping and all the excess wrapping and packaging is best.
Art is such a nice gift. Even a small inexpensive print is a lovely guesture, and helps artists/galleries/collectives. If there are none local, at 20x200.com you can pick something out, or get a gift certificate. Also prints as @PublicDomainRev and @SFMOMA are great.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA You know what's also great? Plants! Get a nice pot from something like melriceceramica.com/micro-shop.html and a succulent and you're done.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA Other good gift certificates: local book stores, local wine stores, local spas, local restaurants...give your money to something other than Amazon wherever possible.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA Board games! I'm getting Wingspan for my mom. And Taco vs. Burrito for Milo stonemaiergames.com/games/wingspan/
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA Speaking of birds, humming bird or song bird feeders are a gift that keeps on giving. drollyankees.com makes the best tube feeders.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA Gift subscriptions to your local paper or, ahem, your favorite non-profit investigative news org: secure.motherjones.com/flex/mj/key/YG…
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA For kids, science kits are so much fun, as are the various subscriptions to science and craft kits. kiwico.com
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA Instead of, or in addition to, getting a cut tree, why not help the planet by giving an urban tree in someone's name. In SF, you can do this here: secure.donationpay.org/fuf/tree-tribu… But there are plant a tree programs almost everywhere.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA Similarly, go on @DonorsChoose, find a district/project dear to a relative's heart, and give in their name. Guaranteed winner with current/former teachers, among others.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA @DonorsChoose Nothing will knock the socks off a grandparent or other relative than getting your kid to make them a piece of art/pottery.
@PublicDomainRev @SFMOMA @DonorsChoose Those pottery painting places are also great ways to get the aforementioned succulent planter...
Another local project I’ve bought a fair bit from is transit.supply. @chrisarvinsf et al make super cute Tshirts, magnets, pins, prints that celebrate mass transit in Bay Area and beyond.
