Medieval magic. Four images of a C14th conjuring manual.

A cleric probably wrote this elegant grimoire, drawing on earlier works. It told how to magically command spirits, find thieves, heal, harm and more. Prayers to the Trinity featured.

I hear fairly often how distant #medieval history is from the modern world, how irrelevant our work is, how it's a niche to only talk about dead white people with no connection to now.

And I get that. I do. I have read those books and taken those classes. But.
None of us emerged as medievalists in a vacuum. Ask people on #medievaltwitter how they became a medievalist and all of the reasons are a connection moderated through something or someone else. Those texts, sites, ideologies, people are all present concerns.
We may delve into archives to look at primary documents about people long-dead in Europe, or even about Europe, but what we do with those archives, how those archives came to be, how and why those documents survive, are modern history.

Sometimes, when working with manuscripts we get really, really close to people from the past. This is a story of a letter from a schoolgirl to her teacher, written probably sometime in the last three decades of the 9th century. A thread #medieval #manuscripts /1
The manuscript in question, Düsseldorf B.3 is a collection of texts, written probably around 820 in Corbie in Northern France. It contains a number of works, ranging from Alcuin through Bede to hymns. It was perfect for school use. /2

Today I was thinking about what to do with my #Magic cards.

So often love of a game comes in direct conflict with dislike of playing with people who are fans of the game. This applies from everything to games like #MtG to #Overwatch #WoW #DnD AL and #pathfinder society
I'm still mad over one situation. In #DnD #LFR organized play, I playing an epic level artificer with all the warlord cheese

There was this man who constantly told me I was slow, and he was so insistent about it that he even convinced my friends at the table I was slow.
But look. I had pre-generated tables for every attack, with all normal modifiers.
I would set aside the exact number of dice before my turn, color dice coded per attack type.

I only even had dice applicable to the character. There was no die hunt
I was optimized.
