It all leads back to self-interest over country.
So I know everyone is pretty much checked out about impeachment but this is a really important moment in the history of this country. For only the third time in United States history, a president has been impeached.
It’s worth reviewing history. In the late 1860s President Andrew Johnson was impeached for violating a law in order to remove a cabinet member for protecting blacks from violence for exercising their suffrage rights. Self-interest (hatred of blacks) over the country.
He was acquitted by the Senate by one vote.
In the late 1990s, President Bill Clinton was impeached for lying under oath at a deposition about his extramarital affair with Monica Lewinski. Self-interest (hiding an affair) over the country. He was easily acquitted by the Senate
In 2019, President Donald Trump was impeached for attempting to withhold congressionally-appropriated money from a foreign government in exchange for the announcement of an investigation into his political rival and then refusing to cooperate with Congress during its probe of him
It’s worth noting the serious charges that have been brought against our current President. The proof is in the pudding (or here, the transcript, which I actually read). In an official call with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, President Trump literally asks for a “favor”
an investigation into the Bidens. By this request, Trump made his own interests greater than the interests of the United States - of you and of me. No thought of his oath of office, no thought of the greater good, only himself and the best path toward reelection.
It should go without saying, but we should not have a president who thinks of himself before the good of the people. Trump has demonstrated this willingness and his shamelessness once it has come to light. I know we’re all tired of this one way or another, but this man is...
dangerous to democracy and dangerous to this country.
I for one support the impeachment of Donald Trump. I likely would have supported impeachment for Bill Clinton and definitely would have supported impeachment for Andrew Jackson. Interestingly I would have supported acquittal of Clinton as well (everyone who cheats lies about it).
Here, I support a conviction in the Senate and removal from office. We simply cannot have someone who puts self before country leading said country, particularly when he seeks help from foreign governments and interferes with foreign policy.
All this and the Senate will likely acquit Trump. The Republicans will fall in line because Trump is too powerful and because - again - of the self-interest in keeping their positions in office rather than putting their country first. The oath means nothing when self-interests...
are in play. Self-interest over the country. Congrats and well done Republicans. #TrumpImpeachment
