We have seen a growth in the number of #internetshutdowns in India since the protests against the newly introduced Citizenship amendment Act have intensified. Where Net has been restored in some cities, some cities still continue to have #internetshutdowns.
We have compiled a list of cities and districts that saw internet shutdown
-#internetshutdown imposed in #Aligarh & #Saharapur from 13th December'19 hasn't been lifted yet.
-#internetshutdown imposed in #Meerut from 15th December'19 hasn't been lifted yet.
-#internetshutdown shutdown imposed in #Azamghad and #Muzzafarnagar from 18th December & 19th December respectively hasn't been lifted yet.
-#internetshutdown imposed in #Bareilly,#Lucknow,#Kanpur, #Mau & #Ghaziabad in #uttarpradesh from 19th December hasn't been lifted yet.
-#Internetshutdown imposed in #Sambhal in #uttarpradesh from 19th December hasn't been lifted yet.
-#Internetshutdown imposed in #Moradabad, #Unnao, #Allahabad, #Agra, #Sultanpur, #Baghpat, #Bulandshahr, #Pilibhit in #Uttarpradesh from 20th Dec hasn't been lifted yet.
-No information is available about the #shutdown imposed in Dhalai, NorthTripura, SouthTripura, WestTripura in #Tripura from 12 October.
-#Internetshutdown imposed in #Lakhimpur, #Dhemaji, #Tinsukia, #Dibrugarh, #Sivasagar, #Jorhat, #Kamrup, #Kamrup (Metro) in #Assam on 11th December was lifted on 20th December.
-#Internetshutdown imposed in #EastGaro Hills, East Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi, South Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, West Khasi Hills in #Meghalaya on 12 December was lifted on 20th December

Overall, the economic cost of internet shutdowns in 2022 is up a whooping 323% from 2021.

Government-run internet outages are picking up pace around the world. In 2021, there were 182 shutdowns in 34 countries. #India, largely Jammu and Kashmir, plunged into digital darkness more times than any other country last year.

India leads total shutdowns globally. In 2021, the world’s largest democracy shut off its internet 106 times – more than the rest of the world combined. Hardest-hit was the region of Jammu and Kashmir, which was subject to 85 shutdowns.

On 25 May 2022, an internet shutdown that lasted for about 7 days was imposed in #Konaseema district of #AndhraPradesh. @SFLCin filed an application under the RTI Act, 2005 on 26 May 2022, to seek information related to the shutdown. (1/7)

Acc to the order provided by the government of Andhra Pradesh in their reply, suspension of the internet was issued to prevent disruption of public order. The reply also clearly reflects that there was no end date for the internet shutdown. (2/7)

On August 4, 2019, the government suspended landline, mobile and internet services in Kashmir. The internet shutdown lasted 552 days, until February 6, 2021, making it among the longest communications blackouts ever imposed in a democracy.
