As public goods incentivization comes closer to the forefront, now's as good a time as any to blast-from-the-past this proposal from 2017:

Summary: by offering discounts to people who contributed to some charity, businesses facing conditions of less than perfect competition (meaning: basically everyone) have the ability to "donate" to that charity at high leverage.
That is, the business might sacrifice $100 of profit, but drive $1000 extra worth of donations to a charity they prefer.

A blockchain-based payment and donation system where economic activity is provable can make this much easier to implement at scale

@ercwl I agree with @interfluidity that the assertion that higher concentration of wealth is good is strange (possibly an economy like BTC with no government-like public good producers would benefit from billionaires more than countries, but even taking that into mind....)

Challenge of the day: come up with a real-life scenario where the utility function U(x) of setting a parameter to x looks like a cusp.

That is, the optimal value is "somewhere in the middle" and not an extreme, but the slope is higher the closer you get to that optimal point.
This particular cusp is y = y_max - (x - x_max) ^ (2/3), but yours can be different. The main property I'm looking for is that the closer x gets to x_max, the higher the additional gain from taking x one step closer to x_max.
One example: you are putting a small ball on top of a large ball, and want to maximize the time until the small ball slides down (the asymptote is not infinity because you don't care about time linearly, eventually you get bored). The param x would be where you put the small ball

Guuuuyyyyys I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of this, but what if like... When Connor has nightmares, he doesn't just *experience* them, he projects them into household electronics by accident?
So like, he has bad dreams over all the shitty times he was hurt or killed, and Hank wakes up to static, voices, gunshots on his TV, blurry and poorly defined first person images. He legit thinks he's being haunted until he figures it out.
He catches on when he realizes all the memories are bad, that he's in some of them, that Connor's voice crackling over the speakers is closer than all the others. He wakes Connor up, freaked the hell out, and just holds him tightly enough to make him creak from the pressure.
