Now is as good a time as any to announce our project on the 2020 Census. Mike Ananny (@ananny) from USC and I are building networks to help local newsrooms cover the census -- newscounts.org 1/
We will create partnerships between newsrooms and local computational resources like college and university statistics, social science and demography departments, and establish a series of Census newsroom fellowships. 2/
The project will underscore the importance of an accurate count both economically ($600B in Federal funds over 10 years will be distributed according to these counts) as well as politically. 3/
This is a broad effort -- tech and data and journalists working together both to help people understand the need to exercise their constitutional right to be counted. That's EVERYONE. 4/
We are looking for journalists and statisticians and demographers. The announcement by the Commerce Department underscores the need to get involved. From local journalistic outlets to high school news papers, we are pulling together a network to help. 6/
With luck, this program will leave behind a strong culture of data journalism, having journalism and stat and computer science and social science and demography all work together to tell unique stories, local stories, data stories.
