Simply owning a weapon makes you about as capable of defending yourself as owning a guitar makes you capable of playing like the rolling stones.
Being gung-ho can endanger the people around you:
In a Yishuv I sometimes visit for weekends there is a guy who has both an M-16 and a pistol on him in synagogue. The rifle has a flashlight on it. My questions are: what does he need it for? Has he practiced clearing a house by himself? >>
He also has two magazines on him. What engagement does he plan on getting into that will require 60 rounds (n/m the pistol). >>>
I can only assume that the answer is no. In this case it just seems like a dude who wants to play army.
America doesn't need those people. They need people who take firearm training and know how to use weapons proficiently.
Take a CPR class; take a first responder class
The world was never worse off for one more Medic or first responder.
