THANK YOU CALIFORNIA. Who in their right fucking mind clicks "sure, sell my personal information" or, as the label goes in this screenshot, "continue to site".
The following disclaimer is just bananas too. "This data does not typically identify you by name or other identifiable means [but, sure, sometimes, and, oh, here's all the other data abuse we always do!]". Then the default is SELL MY PERSONAL INFORMATION 😂
Even as they talk about all the nasty shit they're going to do, they still can't stop themselves from trying to cheat you out of your choice. So you toggle the "Sell My Personal Information" choice, and a new "Accept Cookies" submit button appears. Only visible way to exit...
So I actually erroneously just clicked that button at first, which undoes your choice not to have your data sold! Instead, you have to scroll down, then it reveals a similarly colored Confirm My Choices button. This is so fucking depraved.
Anyone know how to report a CCPA violation? Surely this bullshit, deceptive flow by @CondeNast qualifies. They just couldn't help themselves sneaking in a dark pattern to undo the most sensible choice any sentient being would make.
Really disappointing to see that @wired is part of this deceptive regime to evade and undermine California's CCPA regulations. I wish some enterprising journalists there would pick up this story and report on the deception perpetrated by their corporate masters. Would read 😄!
@WIRED The disclosures they're forced to make really do sound absolutely terrible. Like the first one under "features we use". Basically, we will connect whatever data we can squeeze out of you here with all the other offline sources we have. For one or more "purposes". Fucking hell.
