My teenage cousin just texted me a pic of him on the way to his first show choir competition & I am the proudest queer cousin-auntie ever! I’ve worked this kid’s whole life to encourage him to do whatever he wants, regardless of gender or sexuality norms. I think it’s working. 😭
The #gayagenda is less about making everyone gay & more about making it possible for anyone to be gay without fear. My queerness never scared me. The possibility of being rejected by Catholic friends & family for being queer, however, regularly filled me w/ terror as a teen.

I finished all my work goals today & set up a work date for tomorrow & scheduled mentoring calls & a call with my editor. It’s time to make this book a reality!
Realistically, I think I can finish the manuscript by June. Then it will go out to readers & I’ll get feedback by October. Then I’ll have to revise again & submit again. Best case scenario, we’re looking at a late 2021/early 2022 publication.
I feel good about a 2022 publication bc I really want to do another book tour, but I desperately need to slow down my travel for a bit. I love sharing my work, but between work travel & long distance relationships, sometimes I feel like I barely live in Madison!

If you don’t want a drag queen to read you a story, stay at home & leave more space for the rest of us. Drag queen story time was the cutest part of Madison’s Pride festival this summer.
Note: not all drag queens are gay. Or men. Or trans. My above question is based on an assumption about the haters’ assumptions (& fears & biases & ignorance). Go be extra fabulous today, bbs.

Trying to keep it pretty simple as I move back into this work.
I just want to thank the many folks who talked about experiences of being emotionally blocked from doing the work you want to do. I think I figured out what had been blocking me & am writing my way through it.
I keep coming back to this protest chant by Mary Hooks “The mandate for Black people in this time is to avenge the suffering of our ancestors, earn the respect of future generations & to be willing to be transformed by the work” I had to let myself by transformed by the work.

trans identification presented the perfect opportunity for me to push myself further back in the closet & deny my truth. i was able to stew on my internalized homophobia & misogyny & come up w absolutely asinine and totally unrealistic theories as to how i actually wasnt female.
when i identified as a gay man i used to frequently say: “as a kid i couldn’t picture myself as a woman married to a man. but i also couldn’t picture myself as a woman married to a woman. i CAN picture myself as a man married to a man.” this to me was proof that i wasn’t a woman.
but why couldn’t i picture myself as a woman, even one w a wife, even when i knew i liked girls?
though i “Knew” lesbians existed, i didn’t consider it a real thing or a genuine option for me. i pictured 2 beautiful feminine women in dresses and i couldn’t see myself like that.
