Sportswashing the World Cup from Geneva
swissinfo.ch/eng/business/s…
"Qatar chose Geneva to launch a massive public relations campaign in a bid to secure the World Cup and impose its narrative on sports. From there, the emirate could access FIFA, United Nations institutions, heads of state and diplomats. SWI swissinfo.ch investigated"

BREAKING: #BNNSaudiArabia Reports.

According to Saudi Arabia's sports minister, being forced to sell alcohol by FIFA if the country hosts the World Cup would be Islamophobic. #Islamophobic #SaudiArabia #FIFA #WorldCup #football
The Saudis are considering an ambitious bid for the 2030 event, along with Greece and Egypt, and they have not been discouraged by the intense scrutiny on human rights suffered by current hosts Qatar.
Even while alcohol is available in some #Doha bars, Qatar effectively rescinded pledges that it would be offered at #WorldCup venues just weeks before the event began.

9 months ago today #Russia decided to break international law and condemn hundreds of thousands to death, disability and destruction

It's Day 274 of the invasion of #Ukraine, and here's Thursday's daily thread with all the news

Yesterday's news is here:

#Russia's crack airborne units couldn't defend the right bank of #Kherson - will they fare better in #Donbas where #Ukraine cannot target supply lines as easily.

Here's the UK Intel report for Thursday:

How we got here. Scandals surrounding Qatar, FIFA & the #WorldCup evident over the last 9 years. A few of my tweets date back to 2013. The deaths of Nepalese migrant workers. The UN efforts to call it out. And London-based Portland PR Communications attempts to cover it up...⬇️
The appalling list of abuse was well documented. Nepalese workers lost lives, many who survived bear scars for life. Unions warned that labour conditions in the country could result in as many as 4,000 deaths before a ball was kicked. Guardian video report theguardian.com/world/2013/oct…
As global condemnation continued against Qatar's deplorable treatment of migrant workers building the stadium for FIFA's world cup, Qatar hired the London-based PR firm founded by Tim Allen, Portland Communications, to cover it up. theguardian.com/world/on-the-m…

Some people have tried to deny or call into question these figures. So here’s more info that should further clarify why giving #Qatar the #WorldCup was an awful move.

These are migrant workers who went to Qatar as healthy individuals who have died over the past decade—since Qatar was awarded the #WorldCup

Hello Day 244 and here's the start of another daily thread covering #Russia's illegal war of aggression in #Ukraine.

For the second successive night no widespread bombing or use of attack drones.

There was still a lot of news yesterday, catch up here:

In the early hours this morning the @TheStudyofWar published its daily report/review. Relying on the @ukrpravda_news interview with #Ukraine's Military intelligence chief I tweeted in yesterday's thread, ISW suggests a high-level split in the #Kremlin.

A leap in some categories in #Russia's losses today. 3 x Ka-52 attack helicopters in a day, which UK Intel notes in the next tweet.

Tanks destroyed also well above the mean again, possibly due to #Ukraine's partial counter in #Bakhmut and fierce RU resistance in #Beryslav

Each of them was produced, delivered by the Iranian authorities, Iranian instructors and the military directly trained and managed the launches of drones that destroyed homes, museums, universities, offices, sports grounds and playgrounds, and most importantly, killed Ukrainians.
