No hyperbole. The old bail law—giving judges option to jail misdemeanors/nonviolent felonies—overincarcerated tens of thousands, overwhelmingly (89%) Black/Latino. Vast majority show up & no rearrest. You can’t have a law for a few. All get affected.
I do not trust you have done the research.

That your brother in law is a cop makes it far more likely you’re being fed mistruths.

Man could have been jailed, but prosecutors were so intent on politicizing the tragedy, they overlooked the fact they could.
The fear prosecutors & police (like your brother in law) are disseminating is part of a long tradition of pushing for harsher ineffective laws—based not on reason but on political expediency. I practice in Brooklyn where people have long been released. Crime rates have plummeted.
As commonsense bail reform has started saving lives & keeping families together, I’ve been horrified by desperate attempts to defeat them. Using same tactics of fear used by George Wallace to Trump that got us mass incarceration, now to perpetuate it in NY.
I don’t think you mean badly. You’re concerned. Fear is powerful. Let me know if you’d like to learn more about the devastation bail exacts on poor communities & how people I represent who are released, most on *violent felonies*, live their lives, come to court, & abide by law.
